Before you choose

Good questions.

Here are a few answers.

What ages is it for?

Ages 9–14. Expect independent reading around 11–14 and supported reading around 9–10. Reading confidence and interest matter too — check the description and any available sample on the Amazon listing before choosing.

Is it scary?

Some entries discuss death, grief, persecution, frightening sleep experiences, and harm to people or animals. The writing avoids graphic detail, but readers differ. The book includes a content and scare key — use it before choosing an entry, and younger readers may want to read the darker entries with an adult.

Is the interior in color?

No. The interior is black-and-white, as shown in the sample pages below. The cover is in color.

Where do I see the price and formats?

Each purchase button opens the book’s Amazon listing in a new tab. Amazon shows the current price, available formats, delivery options, and applicable return terms for your location. Your purchase and payment take place on Amazon.

Do we read one monster every night?

No. The optional 31-night reading path covers all 52 entries once, and paired nights invite comparison rather than one entry per night. You can also read straight through or open the book wherever a name catches your eye.

What is actually behind each entry?

Each entry follows records rather than hunting monsters: who told a story, where it was recorded, what kind of source preserved it, and what later retellings changed. The back matter includes source notes, a selected bibliography, a glossary with pronunciation help, and indexes.
