Start your first virtual investigation

Mission 1: Closed-Path Detective

In the companion PDF, read pages 2–7 first, then start Mission 1 on page 8.

Allow 25–40 minutes. You can split the mission across days.

Use a computer or tablet with internet access and the free PhET Circuit Construction Kit: DC Virtual Lab. No electrical hardware is needed.

  1. Write your prediction on page 8 before testing the model.
  2. Follow the virtual investigation on page 9. Record what changes when the path is open or closed in its evidence table.
  3. Use the prompts on page 10 to explain your observations and the limits of the simulation.

Keep your evidence table and explanation as the first record in your engineering portfolio.

Simulation only. Do not use household wiring, outlets, opened electronics, battery packs, or other physical electrical equipment. If the simulation will not load, follow the access-blocker guidance on page 7 and continue with paper reasoning instead.
